Advent Readings 2010

O God, take me in spirit to the watchful shepherd
and enlarge my mind;
Let me hear good tidings of great joy, and hearing,
believe, rejoice, praise,adore,
my conscience bathed in an ocean of repose, my eyes uplifted
to a reconciled Father;
place me with ox, ass, camel, goat,
to look with them upon my Redeemer's face,
and in Him account myself delivered from sin;
let me with Simeon clasp the newborn child to my heart,
embrace Him with undying faith,
exulting that He is mine and I am His.
In Him thou has given me so much that heaven can give no more.
~Valley of Vision

Here's our family's Advent read.  Edited by Nancy Guthrie, this book is a collection of  twenty-two writings from various authors, including Whitefield, Piper, Edwards, and Spurgeon.

From the author's preface:

"What a profound blessing it has been to read through written works and listen to sermons of some of the best theologians and Bible teachers of all time, searching for treasures of insight on the familiar Christmas story.  I've edited excerpts from writings and sermons into meditations that I pray will illumine your mind, awaken your longing, and prepare your heart for a fresh experience of the coming of Jesus this season."

You can read more about it here.

And here is a free pdf of Advent Scripture readings made available by Monergism.

Advent begins next Sunday, November 28th!

Attack of the Snow Leopard

Living up to his strong name, Jedediah Poff took down a dangerous snow leopard found stalking the Poff Clan this past Wednesday evening.

"I might be only five months old, but I already know that my age shouldn't keep me from doing hard things," this cutie pie told reporters.

"Really.  It wasn't as hard as you might think.  Perhaps my bright colored binky terrified him.  All I know is I had to protect my lovely sisters and show the hawk and knife throwing men in this house that I'm a babe to be reckoned with."

Known as "Cap'n" to his family, Jedediah not only killed the leopard, he also stuffed it so his sisters could enjoy the memories of his heroic deeds for years to come.

"Yes, my family has quite a few books.  Just the other day, Reaches Up was reading a taxidermy book to me.  It seemed a good time to put into practice what I had learned."

It's still a mystery how the snow leopard, an animal found in the mountains of Central Asia, ended up in the Poff home.  We are glad to report that Jedediah was not hurt and his binky was intact.  He's considering hosting his own animal show when he turns five.

The Language of Faith

Faith is ever occupied with God. That is the character of true faith—that is what differentiates it from intellectual theology. Faith endures "as seeing Him who is invisible." (Hebrews 11:27) Faith endures the disappointments, the hardships, and the heart-aches of life, by recognizing that all comes from the hand of Him who is too wise to err—and too loving to be unkind. But so long as we are occupied with any other object than God Himself, there will be neither rest for the heart nor peace for the mind. But when we receive all that enters our lives as from His hand, then, no matter what may be our circumstances or surroundings—whether in a hovel, a prison-dungeon, or a martyr's stake—we shall be enabled to say, "The lines have fallen unto me in pleasant places" (Psalm 16:6). But that is the language of faith, not of sight or of sense.
