Weekly Rewind 5/15-5/21/11

May is coming to a close, and everything is happening too quickly!  Last week was very busy and very fun.

Mountain Man and I enjoyed a night away, and then spent my birthday browsing shops, reading at the park, and eating a yummy brunch at Cracker Barrel.  I don't think we've ever been to that Cracker Barrel without all of our children.  It was a strange experience to be led to a table that would seat only four.

When we returned home, the children had such a wonderful birthday welcome for me!  Confetti and purple and pink and white balloons were everywhere.  We grilled out, and I was surprised to get a new lens for my camera.  I'm loving it, and it's great for sneaking shots that I couldn't get before unless I was super close.

I love the "Ortonish" feature on Picnik! :)

Friday we enjoyed a fun date with great friends, eating out and enjoying the movie, The Conspirator.

Yesterday we enjoyed celebrating a dear friend's graduation, and then we came home to beat up build a bookcase.  That's a story that I might tell later.

Scribe is doing well behind the wheel as he racks up the hours towards getting his license, and Little Big Man just started a computer programming course and is having a great time with it.

The biggest news this week is that we said goodbye to Clairesy's binky!  She's done really well, except for a few minutes ago when she saw the above picture with her and her old pal.  It brought back too many memories. :(

Cap'n turned 11 months!

While many others are wrapping up the school year, we'll continue on through the summer. The goal is to finish by August and take September off.  Life never happens as we expect it to, and I'm thankful for the flexibility of homeschooling.

My Mom is still in the hospital and will be moved to a rehab center hopefully later this week.  Thank you for your continued prayers.

"Your children may read many books, but the first
book they read
, and that which they continue to
read, and by far the most influential--is that of
their parents' example and daily deportment."

Weekly Rewind 3/6-3/12/11

It's a lovely spring-like day outside.  There's a refreshing breeze blowing through the windows, and the birds' singing was a welcome "good morning!" earlier.

Mountain Man and Reaches Up continued their book study at the East Mountain Grill, enjoying breakfast, too.  They discussed their next chapter in Boyhood and Beyond (oh, I love this book!), and here's one of Reaches Up's favorite quotes from the chapter:

"Inside every man is the desire to accomplish great works.  Inside every man is the desire to lie around doing nothing.  Every day both of these desires will draw you.  The desire you follow will determine the man you become."

Are any of us too old to not remember this?

Mountain Man saw the ENT doctor yesterday, and his infection hasn't improved much.  The doctor thinks it could take as long as a month, so we covet your prayers for fast healing.  Flying with an inner ear infection is miserable!

The children have had a fun time with the balloons this week, even forcing Cap'n to delight in their passion for color coordination.

For the girls, it was quite the hair-raising experience.  Aren't those smiles delightful?

Little Bit had her first fight this week.  Her opponent was our BIG BAD BUFFET HUTCH.  There were no announcements made or tickets issued.  It was a surprise match.  We're sad to say that the buffet hutch won, and Little Bit walked away with her first (and only ever, I hope!) black eye.  This morning she walked up to me, a sullen expression in tow, and said, "Me have a black eye."

OUCH!

Cap'n was a bit indignant earlier in the week when the pediatrician called him lazy.  You see, he's still not sitting up on his own, and it's evidently not that he can't, he's just not wanting to make the effort.  Still, being called LAZY is offensive to most of us but especially to one whose name is JEDEDIAH.  So, he decided he'd show us a thing or two to
prove this declaration of slothfulness to be an error.

Then he decided he'd get fancy and show that he could sit up AND chew on a calculator, too.  Humph, take that Doctor!

I guess we'll need to refer Cap'n to the quote above, reminding him that sitting up might be more profitable than the desire to lie around on his back or scale mountains of toys.

Clairesy's favorite expression is "No" these days, but she's a bit in denial.  Here's the conversation she had earlier today with Scribe.

Scribe: "Claire, is your favorite word "no"?

Claire:  "Nooooooooo."

The children finished memorizing Romans 5, and now we're going to tackle the BOOK of Philippians as a family.  We're giving ourselves the rest of the year, not because we're wanting to lie down instead of accomplish something, but instead because this Mama has gotten a bit wise.  My Scripture memory schedules rarely go as planned.  Are you memorizing something from the Bible, being intentional about hiding His Word in your hearts?

Lastly, we've been enjoying, as usual of course, deep conversations in our home.  In light of recent  events in the blogosphere, Little Big Man discusses with the REALLY little ones whether or not hell is real, if Mother Teresa was a Christian, Huggies or Pampers, and the implications of the rising gas prices.  They really wanted to know about the wisdom of buying stock in pacifier manufacturing companies, but Little Big Man said he'd have to research it and get back to them.

Never think your Littles are too Little to discuss the deeper things!

Have a beautiful weekend and a wonderful Lord's Day!

Much love,

P.S.  On a much more serious note, here's John Piper's prayer for Japan.

Father in heaven, you are the absolute Sovereign over the shaking of the earth, the rising of the sea, and the raging of the waves. We tremble at your power and bow before your unsearchable judgments and inscrutable ways. We cover our faces and kiss your omnipotent hand. We fall helpless to the floor in prayer and feel how fragile the very ground is beneath our knees.
O God, we humble ourselves under your holy majesty and repent. In a moment—in the twinkling of an eye—we too could be swept away. We are not more deserving of firm ground than our fellowmen in Japan. We too are flesh. We have bodies and homes and cars and family and precious places. We know that if we were treated according to our sins, who could stand? All of it would be gone in a moment. So in this dark hour we turn against our sins, not against you.
And we cry for mercy for Japan. Mercy, Father. Not for what they or we deserve. But mercy.
Have you not encouraged us in this? Have we not heard a hundred times in your Word the riches of your kindness, forbearance, and patience? Do you not a thousand times withhold your judgments, leading your rebellious world toward repentance? Yes, Lord. For your ways are not our ways, and your thoughts are not our thoughts.
Grant, O God, that the wicked will forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Grant us, your sinful creatures, to return to you, that you may have compassion. For surely you will abundantly pardon. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus, your beloved Son, will be saved.
May every heart-breaking loss—millions upon millions of losses—be healed by the wounded hands of the risen Christ. You are not unacquainted with your creatures' pain. You did not spare your own Son, but gave him up for us all.
In Jesus you tasted loss. In Jesus you shared the overwhelming flood of our sorrows and suffering. In Jesus you are a sympathetic Priest in the midst of our pain.
Deal tenderly now, Father, with this fragile people. Woo them. Win them. Save them.
And may the floods they so much dread make blessings break upon their head.
O let them not judge you with feeble sense, but trust you for your grace. And so behind this providence, soon find a smiling face.
In Jesus’ merciful name, Amen.

Weekly Rewind 10/24-10/30/10

We thought cooler weather was here to stay, so we turned on the heater this week.  However, the past few days have been much warmer.  No complaints, though.  The men were able to enjoy tossing the football around a bit later this afternoon, and the colors of autumn are all around us.

Wednesday, Whistler and I went to town for a book study date as well as for my appointment with the dermatologist.  The doctor had to freeze three places on my face, so I appreciate your prayers that the treatment has taken care of any cancer and future cutting won't be necessary.  One of the places is at the outside corner of my eye....can't comprehend having surgery there, but the doctor did say it's not an uncommon area for skin cancer.  I'll return for a follow-up in January.

We tackled in record time changing out our spring/summer clothes for autumn/winter.  That's no small task for so many of us, and I'm thankful most of it is DONE. :)

Scribe is doing well, but I think we're learning to accept that pain will be his companion for quite some time.  His attitude is wonderful, though, and I'm so thankful for his gracious spirit, enduring this without any complaining.  And, really, I mean NO complaining.  How wonderful is the grace of God!

Jedediah is growing and starting to move (rolling over).  The bed is no longer a safe haven, and I'm determined he won't join the rest of the Poff children in falling off of our bed.:)

Our sweet Whistler turns 10 tomorrow!  We're excited about making the day special, and we're thankful we were able to celebrate last night with our dear friends and their children.

Here's a picture of Whistler's favorite way to have Cap'n near her when she's unloading the dishwasher.  He lasts here about 1 minute.

The girls are amazed at Mountain Man's fancy cooking creation.

Sweet Boo gets little sister to sleep.

Have a wonderful week full of rejoicing over God's goodness and mercy!

Weekly Rewind 9/26/10~10/02/10

Oh my!  Can you believe it's already October?  And the time went where?

This means...

~Jedediah is 3-1/2 months old.
~There are only 3 months left to finish up some more books on this year's reading lists.
~Thanksgiving and Advent and Christmas are right around the corner.
~Fall is here, and we can enjoy the cooler nights and favorite comfort foods.
~Scribe is almost 3 weeks post-op and is improving daily.  We've noted a reduction in pain meds needed this week! Praise the LORD!
~Sweet Whistler will soon have her 10th birthday.

Mountain Man and I have resumed our nightly walks.  One of the beauties of living rural is the view of the stars.  I enjoy having him point out the different constellations and planets, and we've added a telescope to our wish-list.  How humbling it is to look at the stars and consider that this is exactly how God's mercies are....too many to count.

Mountain Man and the older boys finished up their study of Thoughts for Young Men, and now he and Reaches Up are going through Boyhood and Beyond.   The rest of this past week was marked by simply enjoying a quiet week at home.

Here are a couple new recipes we enjoyed this past week.

Cheesy Chicken Bundles

1 c. bread crumbs
1/2 c. cheddar cheese, grated
1/2 c. fresh Parmesan cheese, grated
1 t. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
6 boneless chicken breasts
1/2 c. butter, melted

2 T. butter
1/4 c. fresh Parmesan cheese, grated

Mix together bread crumbs, cheese, salt, and pepper.  Dip chicken pieces in melted butter, then in cheese mixture.  Tuck sides of chicken breast under to form individual bundles.  Melt 2 T. butter and pour over chicken.  Sprinkle with 1/4 c. Parmesan cheese, and bake uncovered at 350 degrees for approx. 1 hour, until chicken is crispy.

These turned out perfectly and were moist and crispy.  They're great re-heated in the oven, too, for another time.  This is actually a freezer recipe from Don't Panic-Dinner's in the Freezer.

Festive Corn and Broccoli

1/2 c. butter
12 oz. can Mexican corn
10 oz. pkg frozen broccoli, or 1 fresh bunch
1 t. basil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
1/8 tsp. pepper

Melt butter in saucepan and add remaining ingredients.  Cover and cook for 8-10 minutes, until vegetables are tender but still crisp.
~ from Don't Panic cookbook

Scribe has received more gifts and  sweet cards of encouragement this week.  Thank you for continuing to think of him and keep him in your prayers.

With love,

Weekly Rewind 8/15-8/21/10

Well, something is in the air because for the first time in the 12 years we've lived here, I'm suffering from allergy symptoms....yes, itchy eyes, runny nose, tickling in the throat, etc.

Could it be these?

We're back to our walks, and our roads are lined with gorgeous sunflowers.  To live in the desert, we sure enjoy bursts of color from the many wildflowers.  Mountain Man spent hours this weekend getting most everyone's bikes in shape, so now they're able to ride while some of us walk, and the children are super-happy about that.  "Getting bikes fixed" was actually an item on their summer list....pretty simple, huh?

Here's the reason it's hard for some lovelies around here to get out of bed.  Jedediah   makes for some sweet cuddlin'.

~PRAISE!  My Mom will be able to visit while Scribe has his surgery.  This was an answer to prayer, and we're so thankful to God for making a way for my Mom to be with us.

~Jedediah had his 2 month check-up, and he is doing great!  Whistler captured this sweet shot.

And this one.

Lovely Boo's favorite phrases this past week...."I can't wait to learn to read, " and "I can't wait to be a Mommy."

Another project the guys finished this weekend was the shed.

I'm so pleased with it, and I can't wait for the guys to tackle painting the house next year.

And just when you thought it was safe to play in the front yard....

the rattlesnake shows up.  He didn't last long, though, thanks to Little Big Man and Scribe.  The BB Gun and the sledge hammer were quite effective.  Surprisingly, this is the first rattlesnake we've seen this summer.

And these were the skies last night.

The heavens declare the glory of God.....

Parting thoughts from my reading....

"How many perish by reason of vain learning in this world who take little care of the serving of God.."

"And he is truly learned, that doeth the will of God and forsaketh his own will."
~Thomas A Kempis

Weekly Rewind 6/25-7/31/10

What a week full of God's blessings it has been!  From tackling dreaded projects to finding great bargains to hearing good news, the past days have been full of gifts from the LORD.

~We've started easing back into our school schedule.  We'll be having to take off time this fall because Scribe will be having major surgery done in September (which I'll share more about later) , so we're trying to prepare for that.

~Maintenance is an essential in a family our size with a home our size. We end up with big messes when the little things aren't taken care of. This week we tackled the girls' room.  Ugh...how quickly things get out of hand.  Many hours and lots-of- purging later, we were refreshed by a tidy space that's more manageable.

~I had my 3 month check-up for skin cancer, and I'm so thankful to say the doctor saw no areas of concern!  This is such good news, especially with everything else we have coming up. I brought Whistler, Reaches Up, and Boo along with me (and Cap'n, of course), and they were so well behaved while waiting for the doctor, inviting praise from the staff.  It's wonderful for others to see that children ARE a blessing!

AND JUST WHAT DO THE MICE PLAY WHEN MAMA CAT IS AWAY AT A DOCTOR'S APPT.?

~Chef Scribe whips up sweet dishes like this.

~And shows he feareth not messes when he giveth Peep free reign with the smores. :)

~BONUS....he knew Mama cat would want a picture.

~Scribe has been blessed with the opportunity to be a research assistant/writer for the host of a local weekend radio show focused on political issues.  This is what Scribe loves to do, so we're especially thankful for this blessing from the LORD!

~Isn't this amazing?  It's the tiniest horned lizard we've seen here, yet.

~Whistler's got the touch for keeping Cap'n content.

~Another glimpse of a smile

~God also blessed us in so many ways with unexpected shopping deals....

~I bought "just a few" of those wonderful composition notebooks...25 cents each. :)  We love these and use them quite a bit for our lessons.

~We needed a new lamp shade, so I picked up an inexpensive one at Wal-Mart for $15.00.  What a blessing to discover when checking out that the shade was on clearance for $4.00. :)

~While Whistler and I were stocking up on some great buys at Wal-Greens, we came across these cute journals.  Somehow my daughter has inherited my affection for papers and pens.  We decided to purchase these beauties and have matching journals, thinking the 7.00 price tag was well worth it.

Surprise!  These were on sale for just $2.99.  Another blessing from His hand.

~Yesterday we enjoyed a trip to the Nuclear and Atomic Museum.  What an interesting and family-friendly place it was.  This was one of our "summer list" items, and it was a great way to spend a few hours.

God's goodness is all around us...in the BIG and in the LITTLE.  Are you thanking Him for every good thing He's given you?  How kind He is to pour out daily blessings upon all of us.  Pray for the grace to see them and then faithfully praise Him.  God truly is good....all the time.

Love,

Weekly Rewind 5/3-5/9/10

~Several doctor's appointments last week brought more reasons to praise God for His goodness to us.  My c-section date has been firmed up, and all is looking well thus far.  Whistler had her mouth appliance put on, and other than some pain this weekend, she is adjusting nicely.

~My Mom was hospitalized mid-week and was able to come home on Mother's Day!  She still needs prayers for completely healing and restoration of strength.

~I had a wonderful Mother's Day, getting two of the best presents on Saturday.  Everyone tackled the laundry room, cleaning it up and organizing it.  I even have a hanging system for the mops and brooms! :)  As a bonus gift, Mountain Man fixed the dryer for me.  I can now dry clothes in a fraction of the time, and this Queen Mom is so, so, so, so happy.  With a family our size, it really is depressing to only be able to get through a couple loads a day.  Washed laundry is beautiful, you know!

~Saturday found us with a total flat on the van.  Praise God, Reaches Up noticed it early in the day, and we were able to get everything fixed pretty quickly.

~After church on Sunday, we enjoyed a nice lunch of Rigatoni, bread, and salad, accompanied by sweet tea, of course.  The children put together these lovely suprises....flowers, pretty cards, and balloons.

~Scribe and Little Big Man creatively put hole-punch clippings in a couple of the balloons and rained down confetti on us all.  It was so sweet!

~~Little Big Man and Scribe surprised me with a gift certificate to Monergism, too, so I can enjoy Meet the Puritans, a book I've been wanting since finishing Doug Wilson's biography of Anne Bradstreet.

Here's a lovely quote the children included on the banner.....

"A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts."
~Washington Irving

Our lives and our weeks are far from perfect.  They're full of God's ways of sanctifying us, so that means pain, disappointment, and face-to-face confrontations with our sinful hearts.  BUT, when we learn to give thanks in everything, we can truly always have a merry heart..  He is sovereign, and He is faithful.  There is always something to rejoice about when you know Him.

So blessed,

Weekly Rewind 4/18-4/24/10

"We talk about circumstances over which we have no control.  None of us have control over our circumstances, but we are responsible for the way we pilot ourselves in the midst of things as they are." ~Oswald Chambers

We had a busy week of multiple trips to town for doctor's appointments. God used those times to provide special one-on-one time with most of our children, and everyone adapted to the schedule changes so well. In spite of our sinfulness and multitude of parenting mistakes, we truly have such awesome children. I can't even begin to express my gratitude for the daily blessings our children pour out on us. They are constant pictures of God's grace.

~Luke's visits with the opthamologist and ENT doctors brought news of rejoicing! His eye motion has fully returned and there is no need for any additional medicines. Praise God!

~Whistler did great with her two additional orthodontist visits.  Have you ever had to get a dental impression made?  Yuck!  I was gagging along with her as I watched.  She was a trooper, and we're very proud of her.

~I had a painful complication from my pregnancy and was very thankful the doctor was able to see me.  This is one of those issues that only time will heal, and I'm so grateful I'm getting better day by day.

~Sweet Boo pondered what she'll be wearing and doing in heaven.....will she get to play outside, and will she be wearing a robe on which the sleeves are too long?

~Tonight we'll be having our first "Rejoicing Feast" to celebrate God's provision during Luke's illness.  We're all very excited about this special time of giving God glory for His goodness and mercy to us.

Love,

Weekly Rewind 4/11-4/17/10

We only had a couple doctor's appointments this week, and they both went well!

~I saw my OB, and the tentative date for Baby Boy's arrival is June 16th!  I really wanted to push it to July, but considering my c-sections, the doctor didn't want to go that far past my due date.  So, please pray that baby's lung development will be great and there won't be any complications.

~Whistler had a visit with the orthodontist to get fitted for an appliance to help with some teeth issues.  It was the first of three, and she did great!  She hasn't had much pain from the spacers that were put in, and we're so thankful!

~Whistler made her first batch of blueberry muffins for her Daddy and brother.

\

~they would have looked prettier, but Mommy didn't leave them in the pan long enough...thankfully, that didn't stop Scribe, especially, from enjoying them.

~the men had a great time jamming on the harmonica (harp), piano, and guitar last Sunday evening....such a treat to hear them play "Amazing Grace" together

~Luke finished up the rest of his antibiotics this week!  Yippee...we're so glad for him.  He has two appointments next week, one with the ENT and the other with the opthamologist.  I'm wanting to have a "rejoicing feast" next Saturday to celebrate God's goodness.

~The girls and I had another lovely tea time today while the men were teaching the Boy Scouts how to throw hawks and knives.  Whistler and I tried a new scone recipe made with sour cream that turned out great.  (I'll post the recipe later next week.)   We're hoping to try at least a couple new recipes each month to add to a "tea time" collection.

~While my Mom was here, she showed Whistler how to crochet washcloths, and Whistler finished her first one today!  Isn't it pretty?  Great job, dear daughter!

Praising Him for another week full of His grace and mercy,
