Hi. My name is Trisha, and musophobia is my shadow.
Ask me to change extreme diapers or clean up middle-of-the-night vomitus, and I'll boldly go where few men dare. Put me under the knife to bring forth life or burn my skin to rid me of cancer, and I'll push through the fear.
But let a mouse scurry across my path or eat the food in my pantry or leave its cursed droppings in my linen closet, and I will lose control. Absolute control.
Perhaps this phobia started when I was just a child, staying at a family member's home in the summer. Our late nights were full of french fries and card games...and hopping from chair to couch to keep those pesky rodents from getting too close. This was the price of country living. The mice thought they were part of the family.
Then, we bought our home in the desert and the cruel reality of home invasion surfaced. I remember arriving to a dark house one night, ready to clean and prep it for move-in, and seeing my first evidence of the utter boldness of these creatures. They had eaten a hole almost clean through the potato chip bag on the counter and left me droppings along the way. I was disgusted.
In our years of living in this house, I've encountered mouse babies in my linen closet (and had to call the neighbor boy over to dispose of them because Ink and Little Big Man were so little and my Beloved was out of town), dead mice in a Beanie Baby container, a renegade pantry mouse that eluded us for a LONG time, and other rodent nightmares. I even remember calling an exterminator and having him tell me mice were well known for crawling over people's faces at night while they were sleeping (yep, he really wanted our business).
Yes, I know cats are great mousers, but we live in the desert, and a cat outside has the life expectancy of about 12 hours. We love our friendly Bull Snakes, but unless we imprison one under our house, their success rate is hit and miss. Steel wool, poison, traps...we've tried it all, and though poison ranks high in my book, no remedy has been permanent. Thankfully God gives us occasional reprieves during which we won't spy a mouse for months.
This last rodent-relief session ended the other night while Cap'n and I were watching something on the computer. Have you ever had that sensation when you haven't seen something directly move before your eyes, but your eyes saw something nonetheless? Not only did I indirectly see movement, but the wrapping paper roll next to me moved. Cap'n and I were out of that chair in a millisecond, landing on the bed for refuge. I was screaming for Jake, our second oldest, and before you know it, all three men are in the room looking to confirm my claim that a mouse was in the house.
"But, did you SEE it?" was the question. "Well....no, I didn't see it, but I know something was there." Uh-huh.
I didn't hear another peep from my supposed nemesis, nor were there any sightings that night. The trap was ignored, and there weren't any late night sounds of invasion. (You know...you're lying in bed and hear the scurrying over in the corner or the scratching, and you just know they're having a good time with your stuff.) I thought perhaps my musophobia had morphed into paranoia. I was relieved to think I was crazy.
Fast forward to the next day, the MIDDLE of the day, and I'm talking to my Mom on the phone. I'm de-cluttering here and there and moving about MY house with confidence and ease, as any good homemaker should have the freedom to do. And then IT happens. The IT that, only by God's mercy, did not put me into labor.
I stepped, barefoot, on a mouse.
Oh me. Oh my. It was the grossest furry sensation I've ever felt. I ran, screaming all the way, to the other room, hanging up the phone and leaping on the couch. There was not trace of a quiet and gentle spirit in me. Poor Jake, who was outside on a ladder, had to keep himself from falling, so startling was my scream.
Everyone rushed inside and gathered around the creature in the kitchen. They told me it was still alive, but that I had crushed its head with my foot. They said there was blood. I'm still having a hard time believing their story. After all, there was no blood on my foot, and when I looked down, that Madness-Inducer appeared to already be dead.
The Littles stared in wonder as I wept on the couch at the horror of it all, my three year old offering me the truth of, "But, Mommy, God made that mouse." At dinner, I was given the name "Mouse Killer" and my precious family shared scenarios from Mouseland-Down-Under in which those creatures are trembling at the thought of the pregnant lady's foot that looms above them. My three year old continues to tell me how she'll kill mice with her bare feet when she's a Mommy.
Delightful.
It's been said "in acceptance lies peace." That's just not stickin' with me right now. In acceptance of my morbid fear of mice, I still have a morbid fear of mice. In acceptance of God's providence, I ponder the thought that He placed that mouse at that time under my foot, my BARE foot. Joel Osteen would declare that's a picture of God telling me I can have victory over my fear of mice if I just believe hard enough.
For now, I'll just pray for reprieves, keep a good supply of traps and poison on hand, and work on re-directing my three-year-old's mothering aspirations. And if you ever hear me scream, well, you can pretty well guess why.
With love,
Trisha
Making Your Home an Oasis

Hi, Trisha.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful to have your support. :)
DeleteI don't like mice, either - but snakes are the WORST for me. When we first moved into our home, we encountered lots of field mice. I've jumped on the couch and the bed to escape them. Now we just use Decon. I'll find a dead one in the attic every once in a while. Praise God I haven't seen a live one in over a year!
ReplyDeleteYes, Melissa, I have a friend who is terrified of snakes like I am of mice. She doesn't even like to see pictures of them. My children will actually pick up the Bull Snakes and carry them on their shoulders. For some reason, it doesn't freak me out like mice. I'm so glad you haven't seen a snake, though, in such a long time!
DeleteFriendly snakes?? Please! I hate all snakes, lizards, any rodent actually. We now have the joy of skinks coming onto our decks! The little darlings enjoy sunning their brightly colored bodies there. I have Googled how to get rid of them but every article just tells me they are our friends and eat insects. Give me an insect over skinks (lizards!) any day. So, I know how you feel about the mice. Glad you didn't go into labor!
ReplyDeleteHugs~
Oh, yes, Sandy, I love the Bull Snakes. They are my friend. LOL! My children would go crazy over the skinks. We have lizards, too, crawling all over the deck, and even the girls love to pick up the horned lizards and tote them into the house. It's just a reminder that we all have our different phobias...or at least creatures we'd rather live without. Hugs to you, too!!
DeleteOh poor Trish! I too have endured much, but am also TERRIFIED of mice. One day my laundry tub in the basement was flooding. I quickly told my husband, and he said there is probably a sock or such stuck in the drain. (this had happened in the past) So, I stuck my bare hand in the dark, murky waters to retrieve the "sock." Sure enough it was blocking the drain. I squeezed it as I pulled it up, to ring out the water. When I took a look, it was no sock, but a dead mouse with its eyes bulging and guts squeezed out. It was SO GROSS, I started shreeking, and wiping my hands up and down my poor husbands arms, as he had followed me down. This was 11:00pm, and all of the children were sleeping. I yelled so loud, that my oldest sons awakened two stories up. They came running, and said they were not surprised it was "only" a mouse, they recognized my shriek!
ReplyDeleteThankfully the poison usually works, and I don't often see them!
Great story!f
Lisa
Ok, Lisa, your story TOPS mine!! Oh my. See, I'm thanking the LORD now that I just stepped on one instead of wringing its guts out. You poor thing...I would have reacted the same way and fainted, too. It's always good to hear from you!
DeleteHA! You need a vacation in Mexico :)
ReplyDeletelove you!
You're right! That's a very good reason to have to go to Mexico. :) No mice, right, my friend?
DeleteI would die if anything like that happened to me! In my view, you are very brave because you survived the incident.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you understand, Rebecca! It was surely a most unintentional bravery. LOL!
Delete"Joel Osteen would declare that's a picture of God telling me I can have victory over my fear of mice if I just believe hard enough."
ReplyDeleteBwhahaha!
I'm so sorry for your ordeal but your post is hilarious. Thankfully no mice in our new house. But we had mice both live and dead, and raccoons in our old house. I can deal with mice. Snakes are another story.
Glad you got that one, Persis! See, I'm not so freaked out by snakes since they eat the mice. :)
DeleteI just have to say, that. is. so. gross! Ugh!
ReplyDeleteYes, Andrea, it definitely was so.gross. :)
DeleteThat's hilarious and frightening all at the same time! What do you use in your traps. Chunky peanut butter works every time!
ReplyDeleteYes, we use peanut butter AND oatmeal, actually. Will have to give the chunky a try. :)
DeleteAaahhhh! I don't like mice either. But, so glad for the smiles you brought my way, as I remember being very, very pregnant and balancing on top of the toilet to get away from one of those scary creatures. :)
ReplyDeleteJessica
It's amazing how quickly a rodent can cause a pregnant woman to move, isn't it? :)
DeleteOhhh, Mrs. Poff!!! I was empathising with you so much reading your post!!
ReplyDeleteMom is still wondering how you were able to continue living in the house as you have....She doesn't think she could have if it had been her phobia- a snake.
I am so glad you were able to see a (bit?) of humor in this story and share it with us. I read it aloud to the family as we can see any momma doing this. (Maybe from all the wonderful views we have had of our Mother jumping from the garden 12 feet to the door, almost blacking out, etc.) Praise God for mouse-killers in your house!! (and the cute 3 year old does have a good viewpoint on it....so long as she doesn't think that it is her sole occupation I wouldn't change her mind!!) (hahaha)
Praying you never, ever have this happen again....
Rebecca
Yes, I think of your Mom and the snakes whenever I'm battling mice. I completely understand the fear!
DeleteI am fortunate that my cat is an excellent mouser. Glad to hear you survived that. Maybe your screams will care the others away.
ReplyDeleteOh, if it was only that simple, Kim, the mice would have cleared out of here years ago. :)
DeleteGlad you "squeaked" by somewhat unscathed! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Amy! I'm sure my family was wishing I had only been squeaking!
DeleteSome day, when we get together again, I'll have to tell you the story of my encounter with a rat who was trying to gnaw his way into my bedroom. It's too much to write here, but it brought up many questions during the ordeal:
ReplyDelete1) How long can one continue to work without sleep?
2) How long does it take a rat to gnaw through the wall right next to my bed.
3) Is the man at the hardware store right? He said if I have one, I also have another because they don't like to live alone?
4) Why is this rat out in the suburbs? I expected field mice maybe, but not a RAT?
It was an ordeal that I don't EVER want to repeat, so I can relate to your harrowing story!
Love to All,
Cousin Patty
I look forward to hearing that story in person, dear Patty! Love to you!!
DeleteOh, Trisha! You have my sympathies dear sister! Thank you for this late night laugh -- though, i do know that the humor came later and not during the ordeal! :) Love you much!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to give you a late night laugh, precious Christina! I love you, too!!
DeleteI'm really sorry about laughing at your misfortune, but laugh I did. Aloud. Twice. Once when first reading your post, and again but louder when reading it to my family. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteI made you laugh twice? And aloud? Then mission accomplished, dear Jeanne! :)
DeleteOHHHHHHH! I laughed and laughed and laughed reading this! You have brought me such laughter tonight - thank you, Trisha!!!! :))
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I would be the same. My scream would be heard by several neighbours, I am sure. I have had some horrible situations with mice that startled the life out of me, but thankfully - THANKFULLY - I have never stood on one barefoot. And honestly, that is one of the reasons I am hesitant to walk barefoot even in my house. Between mice, skinks, and cockroaches... Shoes and slippers are my friends! :P
Clara,
DeleteI've missed you!! How wonderful to see you here, and I'm so glad you got the humor of it all. :) Oh, dear, I think the cockroaches would drive me to madness, too. I remember when I was very little and my sister was recently married that she called my parents in the middle of the night screaming because the house she had rented was infested with roaches. Now that's different than just coming across them now and then, but it would still make me want to wear shoes all of the time, too. Love and hugs to you!!
Oh Trisha....I would have done the same thing I am very sure! How horrid to step on it with your bare foot! My Melody occasionally deals with this issue too as she is country girl now and mice just come with the title. Her little house dog usually alerts her when one is about and she calls her husband in to "get it" haha...She NEVER leaves any food out and keeps all her pantry items in Tupperware and plastic boxes. When they got home from their recent little vaca, there in the traps (that her hubby just decided to leave "just in case") were two mice! Guess they are just a fact for her. Anyway, I soo sympathize! HUGS
ReplyDeleteDebbie,
DeleteYes, we have to leave traps ready for mice, too, whenever we go out of town. I'm glad to hear they caught the pests instead of having them take over the house while they were gone. :) You're right...mice are just part of where we live.
As a fellow musophobe - the very thought horrifies me. I think I just might have nightmares.... Though a similar thing did happen to me once. WAY back when I used to be a fast food manager I reached into box that was too high for me to see into, expecting to pull out a roll of credit card receipt paper and instead ended up with a dead mouse in my hand. I think the customers still in the parking lot heard me scream. I still get the shivers just thinking about it!
ReplyDeleteAnd, you totally cracked me up with the Osteen comment :-)
Oh, Jessica, I think I might have quit my job that day. :) Truly, misery loves company, and I'm glad to know another musophobe!
DeleteI share your mouse/rat phobia, I came across one in our garage once, I opened the door and there he was, scared me silly. For the next week I would knock on the garage door before I opened it....I wanted to make sure he had time to hide before I opened the door...husband just laughed (but he also caught it for me)Loved this story!
ReplyDeleteMaryann,
DeleteI didn't share about my morning ritual. There are traps in our bathroom, and each morning, I tiptoe into the room and peek around the corner of the counter to make sure no mice are there. :) And if they are? You guessed it. I won't go into that bathroom. Isn't it wonderful to have husbands who will dispose of these nasty creatures for us?
YOU are a good sport, my dear! This was hilarious and oh my goodness I feel for you!!! I don't have the fear of mice you do, but NO ONE would want to step on one with their bare feet!!! Eeeewwww!!! We've got a renegade mouse in our house right now, but as soon as we put a couple of traps out we haven't seen any evidence since. We spotted a bull snake out on the deck this evening, so maybe he's helping the situation! This one was fun and creepy all at the same time, my friend. :o) (I stepped on one of those ginormous centipedes last summer! Had my socks on though - but you should have seen the scream and dance I did to get the sock off my foot! However, I must admit it would have been more funny looking if I was pregnant back then. :o))
ReplyDeleteLove you!!!
Tami
Oh my goodness. What (hilarious!) horror---I shudder at the thought of stepping on a mouse with bare feet. We've had plenty in our homes, and once saw one in my car when I was driving on the expressway. I was so afraid it would crawl up my pant leg, but it didn't, thankfully. Oh, I detest mice!
