These First Baby Days

I had forgotten what a mixed bag these postpartum days can be. I'm over the moon in baby love with Elijah and so thankful for God's innumerable mercies. I'm surrounded by so much life and tokens of His goodness and mercy. And then I have my moments in the valley, too, as I think of how different welcoming baby number nine is from earlier blessings.

There are empty places at the table of our welcoming party. My Dad and Ben's Dad aren't here to see this Little Man. My cousin, Michele, who always made such a big deal of our babies, is gone, too. And honestly, by the time you've had this many children, family members and friends often lose interest. The cards are fewer (a casualty of our digital age) and the baby gifts, too. No matter how many children you have, you never tire of seeing another "congratulations" splattered across pink or blue paper or opening another pack of diapers. These are tangible things that say, "We're so glad your baby is here!"

But the silence around this table reminds me how disconnected our own families are. Many members wouldn't be able to tell you how many children we have, and especially not all of their names. How do we get to such a place of being strangers after spending our earliest days together, and how do we keep our own children from suffering the same as they grow older and live their own lives away from one another?

And of course, just like death, life begs you to reevaluate everything you're doing. How am I investing my time? Have I done well by my other children? What really matters and is that what I'm pouring my energy into?

One might say all this thinking is just hormonal, but I think instead it comes with aging and being more aware of how precious life is and how unexpectedly death comes and wanting to have lived each moment in between for God's glory. It's such a tall order. But for His grace...

Jedediah is comforting Elijah with the news that a more masculine boppy cover is on the way. :)

Jake plays for Elijah.

Ella could do this all day.

Elisabeth expresses the joy we all feel in having Elijah with us.

I am blessed to be able to share these glimpses into your life. I love all the photos; reminds me of my younger days spent sitting next to a baby with siblings and shaking a rattle. With my baby brother now 7, it seems like such a long time ago now. :')

  21. Trisha, Congratulations on your newest little sweetie. He's completely precious! If ever there is a moment to see so clearly the hand of God, it's when you hold that new little baby ♥ I love how you so clearly captured the emotions of a Mama. Am I doing enough? Is my time spent on the right activities? Having a baby does bring life down to the simplest of matters.....what matters most is our family. Loving them. Holding them. Capturing their hearts.

Such a wonderful time to ponder~

I had to laugh when you said " by the time you've had this many children, family members and friends often lose interest" Oh how true that can be!! As if any child is less precious than another :-/

What a blessed Mama you are. NINE beauties all a glow with the LORD~

I hope you are resting. Holding beautiful Elijah (btw, I love his dimples!)and just taking all this goodness in because as your blog title states this is "The Good Life" :-)

    hugs and prayers~Cinnamon

  26. Absolutely ALL beautiful pics. Especially with you, and the one of Elijah with the "next baby up"♥ I am getting to know the names of my bloggy friends children and I always think that makes them closer. I was touched by my brother when he visited recently and made of point of calling each of the (grand) children by name. He cares ♥
Enjoy these precious new bub days. (Your hubby is a keeper, eh?)

  27. Just Beautiful!! It is very meaningful when each child is recognized in name and as a person. My brother has ten children and live a many hours drive from us. It does get hard to keep track after a while. But all babies and children are a Blessing. Enjoy your little and big ones. You are doing great!

    God Bless,
    Beth

  29. Hi Trisha
So nice to have you back!!!
Loved your post and have to agree, each child is a gift and blessing, no matter how many.
I'd love to have a list of each one of your children's "real" names to think about them and pray for them.
Hope you are getting lots of rest!
Cuddle and snuggle as much as you can, because you know how fast it goes!
    Love Lisa
