Give to the Winds Thy Fears

"We can draw no deadlines for God. He hastens or He delays as He sees fit.
And His timing is all-loving toward His children."
~John Piper

****
I had mentioned some time ago that sadness has been my second skin. Well, it's still with me. It's not that there aren't many moments of joy. There are. Who could live with these nine delightful children and be void of any joy? Even more, who can meditate on what Christ has done, on His amazing redemption of us, and not rejoice? But, that sadness, that darkness, is still hanging around. Perhaps only those who've experienced this know what I mean.

This morning I was reading again in 1 Corinthians how we're to run this race for the prize. We're to beat our bodies into submission. Such encouragement this is! Too often Satan whispers that life shouldn't be so hard. How untrue! Every day we struggle. Every day we battle something...worries, fears, our own besetting sins.

Right now, I'm simply overwhelmed, by the sadness, by my own flesh, by a host of "little things." I can't focus. I can't even seem to complete a thought, which is one reason any posts shared here are quite sporadic, and why my poor children are learning to interpret "that thingy" quite well. "Clairesy, please get...um...that thingy." Did I mention I'm absent-minded, too? Last night I misplaced my Kindle, and I was sure I had put it in the oven or the freezer. Thankfully, I was wrong.

Everything I do requires conscious effort and will, akin to having to remind myself how to put one foot in front of the other. At end of the day, I praise God for every ounce of grace He's given me just to get done what I've gotten done, as I quietly struggle to squash the thought, "It's still not enough..." But the good news is that there's lots of fight in me. By His grace, my boxing gloves are on, His mercies are new every morning, and He's working every bit of sadness for my good and His glory.

Today I plunged myself into Piper's When the Darkness Will Not Lift and came across this gem. Maybe it will encourage you, too. And if you think of it, I'd be so blessed to have you pray for me.

Give to the Winds Thy Fears
by Paul Gerhardt (1656), translated by John Wesley

Give to the winds thy fears,
Hope and be undismayed.
God hears thy sighs and counts thy tears,
God shall lift up thy head.

Through waves and clouds and storms,
He gently clears thy way;
Wait thou His time; so shall this night
Soon end in joyous day.

Far, far above thy thought,
His counsel shall appear,
When fully He the work hath wrought,
That caused thy needless fear.

Leave to His sovereign sway
To choose and to command;
So shalt thou, wondering, own that way,
How wise, how strong this hand.

With love,
Trisha

  2. I will pray for you Trisha. I'm sorry to hear you are still sad. You are a wonderful woman and your family doesn't want to see you in the dumps. You can tell satan to just let himself out the door, you've WAY to many blessings to fool around with him!

  3. I understand and will be standing with you in prayer, Trisha. I have found the book "Spiritual Depression" by D. Martyn Lloyd Jones to be very helpful to me.

  4. Considering it a privilege to pray for you - having experienced depression when our children were still home with us and young, I have an idea of what you are going through. I know you are waiting on God and trusting Him to walk through this with you. Your writing is a blessing to me - thank you for asking for prayer - we are blessed to take this to God on your behalf. - Esther in NJ

  5. I will be praying for you.....I think it is so hard to deal with feelings of sadness when we aren't sure where they come from. If we know what we are struggling about, it doesn't make it easier, but it makes more sense....if that makes sense. I have struggled with depression over the years and much of it when my children were little. You will be in my prayers. I have been wanting to write a comment anyway and tell you how beautiful your blond children are.....I had dark-haired, brown-eyed beautiful little ones and I love seeing these tow heads. All my grandchildren except one have blue eyes and I do not know where that came from. I love that poem.....so beautiful. Do you take Vitamin D? Also, are you near the age of peri-menopause? Please keep sharing what you are reading.....it inspires me. Love from Michigan.....what state do you live in? Placing you in God's Hands and praying for His perfect peace.

    1. Jane,
      Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate your taking the time to encourage me! Your comments about my blonde-haired babies are always a blessing. Yes, I have started changing some of my supplements, and I live where we get sunshine almost every day of the year. Your prayers are a gift, and I'm so grateful that you would choose to spend even a fraction of your time praying for me. Thank you again, and thank you for visiting!

  7. Oh Trisha, I can relate to so much of this. My children are excellent interpreters of "thingy" and no longer cringe when I call them by about a thousand names before I get theirs right. *hugs* I'm so sorry to hear you are sad. I wish I could give you a big hug! I will be happy to intercede for you friend. Love you!

  8. A little late in seeing this request for prayer, but just read your newest post and see that you are doing better. We all have those times of lingering darkness. I certainly have, given my family's circumstances. But, I'm here to tell you that it does lift. His love and mercy for us is all too great for any deception of the enemy to hang over us for very long. New mercies each and every morning, a great abiding love, eternal salvation! We are so blessed, regardless of the battles we must fight while we are in these temporary earthly tents. I love you and your precious family and you are in my prayers.
