Swinnock's warning about the vanities of great men is fitting for all of us.
How many great persons spend their time as Seneca speaketh, inter pectinum et speculum occupati, between the comb and the glass, and not between Scripture and prayer. Their labor is to go finely, to fare deliciously, to live honourably, to prosper outwardly; but not to honor God fruitfully, to discharge the trust which is committed to them faithfully, or to work out their own salvation diligently.
~George Swinnock
**George Swinnock was a Puritan minister and father of 9 who lived from 1627-1673. He's described as a "man of good abilities and a serious, warm, and practical preacher." (That sounds like my preacher!)
