It's one of our favorite things to do at the end of the year--make our next year's reading list. Our lists aren't chains that weigh us down but rather compasses that keep us going in the right direction.
There are at least four things that are true about my own reading lists:
1) I've never finished every book on them.
2) I always read books that aren't listed.
3) I tend to be very lop-sided, usually reading more from one genre than the others.
4) My personal lists don't usually include our homeschooling reads.
The oldest boys and I are tackling Calvin's Institutes this year, and thankfully, we have a reading plan to help us along. (By the way, The Envy of Eve is by Melissa Kruger. I'm too lazy to take another picture with that correction. :))
This year's Family Focus is Loving His Church. I've already added some more books to that category, including What is a Healthy Church Member by Thabiti Anyabwile, The Little Church that Stayed Home by Gary Gilley, Loving the Church by John Crotts (which I've already read), and Why Church Matters by Joshua Harris. I know I should read Pagan Christianity and other anti-church books, but I'm not sure I'm up for the rise in my blood pressure. Maybe I can convince my Beloved or Ink to tackle those.
The only thing I'd like to add to my list is at least another biography. Any suggestions?
Much love,
Trisha

Have you read A Chance To Die? It's Amy Carmichael's biography.
ReplyDeleteDid you design these printables or did you get them somewhere? Also, you have lovely handwriting :)
Hollie,
DeleteYou're funny. :) Those aren't printables. They are Levenger pads on which I doodled the categories for my reading. You made me smile big!
And yes! I have that book--just haven't read it, yet. That's a great idea!
I have never heard of Levenger pads! They look great. Where do you find them?
DeleteI hope you lie the book if you decide to read it. It is one of my Emma's favorites :)
I love your printing my sweet friend. A book list is a great idea. And...I was encouraged by your disclaimer. Hmmm...biography...I will have to give that a little thought. If I think of something, I will let you know.
ReplyDeleteLove you!
Camille
Oh, I love you, too, Camille! We must start the New Year with another phone chat very soon! xo
DeleteWonderful list you have here! I am reading Loving the Church right now! What did you think of it?
ReplyDeleteI found the coffee shop scenario a bit annoying at first, but I did really like the book. I thought it was a good "primer." What do you think of it so far?
DeleteHappy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThat's a very impressive (and creatively drawn up) list. I just finished "Loving the Church" by John Crotts. I'm with you about reading anti-church books. My graciousness of spirit would be tested beyond what it could bear. :)
As to biography - The Life of David Brainerd by Jonathan Edwards or John G. Patton, Missionary to the New Hebrides. The Paton book is long but worth getting to the finish. I cried through most of Brainerd's diary because he suffered so much.
Love this, and so nicely written and complete. I'm in the middle of mine and it's a scribble. I am sure a few of yours will find their way to my list. Confessions and City of God is on my list - I'm a little sceptical but hope to get those done. Intro made me chuckle - ha! exactly. Blessings in this new year, dear one,

Where's the Like button!? Oh, it's 'write here' (haha- not funny? oh well)!
ReplyDeleteYou do indeed have lovely handwriting and those are such neatly created lists. I've never really made one for myself. My reading list generally goes "I'll try to read x amount of books this year" of which I don't read half of. I still have the list you so graciously gave me through email that I've not even made it to. Perhaps I should start there.
Now I am off to find out what Levenger pads are... ;)
Love your list, friend!
ReplyDeleteSo looking forward to "reading along" with you ;)
XOXO
I love your book list, Mrs. Poff! And they're so pretty! I'm still working on mine - sickness in our family - again - slowed me down on getting things ready for the New Year. Oh well... I need to remember the LORD's timing is perfect. :D
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with an above commenter that "Missionary Patriarch" by John G. Patton is a great biography! Though, technically it's an autobiography is I remember correctly. I also really liked John Adams by David McCullough. :)
I hope you're having a blessed Sunday! :)
To the KING be all the glory!
