There is a great need to stop as a family together, pray for a whole evening, for a whole day off together, discuss, pray, and ask God, 'Please show us before it is too late what balance we are to have in our family.'
I can say positively that the years fly past like a mist in the night. Time disappears more quickly than smoke. It is not possible to go backward. The 'now' is important if there is ever to be any family life. Steve Turner, a young English poet, has a line in his poem "Ageing" which I would like to quote from the book Tonight We Will Fake Love.
At some point in his life
There came a shortage of future
Apply to the family life this truth concerning time. Economic shortages can never compare with 'a shortage of future.'"
~Edith Schaeffer

Years ago one might have read this and immediately thought of the ways parents sacrifice their children on the altars of prosperity or career or "me time." Those are still battles, of course. But now, the digital world offers so many more ways to waste the time God has given us to teach and disciple our children for His glory.Surely all of us have noticed the family who eats dinner out together, but who aren't really "together" because each is so busy enjoying social media. And what about the Mom who craves on-line connection and approval so much that her phone is glued to her side, and her children must fight for her attention? "Mommy, look at me." "Mommy, are you listening?" Before you know it, those little children just stop asking for Mommy's attention and simply seek it elsewhere.
It's easy to tell ourselves that today is just an exception, but before we know it, not being right here has become the pattern of our lives. And though eternity waits for all of us, be it spending it in heaven or in hell, we're all living our way to a shortage of future here on earth.
A precious friend started the day almost a month ago not knowing it was the day her 18 year old son would be absent from his body and present with the Lord. I'm sure she's had days when she hasn't redeemed the time, but there is no doubt from the fruit in her children's lives that she has soberly considered her responsibilities to the Lord to teach her children well.
There is a season for everything, and the season of parenting our children is very short. The wise woman remembers the Gifts in her midst, the souls God has entrusted to her, and she casts off any weight that would makes these little ones stumble, that would keep her distracted and longing to be anywhere other than wholeheartedly where God has placed her.
"Mothers, look up and look ahead! Ask yourself: In five, ten, twenty, even forty years, what will I wish that I had done today?"
~Jean Fleming

Trisha -
ReplyDeleteSo often your posts give me the gift of thinking through something. I remember while raising our 6 little ones times of feeling pulled in so many directions by the world and sadly, sometimes by well-meaning friends who said I "should" be involved in other things and not be defined by my role as wife and mother. My heart was always in our home which I considered a blessing from God and being there with our family was one of my greatest joys - and yet, somehow it was easy to feel like I was not ministering or doing much helping outside of our home. Now, 40 years later as grandmother to 10 and more eventually, if God is willing, I find that the world and well-meaning friends STILL tell me that I should have a bigger picture than "just" our home, my husband, our children and grandchildren - but God has seemed to give me only the amount of energy I need to meet the needs of those nearest and dearest to me without much left over - my joy runs over in ministering here and when I am stretched too thin, joy exits and fretting and being tired enter. Looking back I give praise to God for His wisdom in keeping me at home and am so content as I look back on those years of having our children at home. Your post encouraged me to remember to choose joy each day now, hold onto our Savior knowing He cares and guides, and give thanks that I am blessed to minister here where He has placed me - and that if He preserves me longer years that I will look back on this time with contentment and joy in knowing He doeth all things well. Praying for you and your family - Esther in NJ
I enjoyed your comment Esther. You and I lived through the beginning of the women's lib movement didn't we? It wasn't easy being a stay-at-home Christian mom back then for me either - I'm so thankful for the quiet life God has given me now - I so enjoy my kids and grandkids and the noisiest I ever get is here on the Internet! haha!
DeleteGod bless you friend.
Esther,
DeleteYour words are quite humbling and so encouraging. What a blessing to hear from a Mom on the other side of things and to hear your gratitude for the joys of being a wife and mother. Beautiful! May God strengthen your heart and may He keep you faithful to do what He's called you to do, resting in His abundant provision. Thank you so much for praying for my family. I am very grateful!
Trisha,
ReplyDeleteI often have felt that I was not living in the moment, now knowing the future I have lost is of my own creation. With Pete having cancer now, my outlook has changed. I am enjoying the moments with Pete, and Brandon. Of course there are moments, minutes, and hours in which I fail, but I have a sense of urgency that was not there before. Thank you for your post. I have been encouraged today.
Love,
Sister Catherine
I love you, sister. {HUGS}
DeleteLove this. These are sobering, faithful words. And you bless me by affirming this call to obscurity. The older I get, the more focused I become, narrowed to the task God has called me of building a cathedral inside my home, a place where God is pleased to dwell, one heart at a time. To be found faithful to the task is all I ask and I must trust God for the increase.
ReplyDeleteMay your works praise you in the gate, my friend.

Elizabeth,
DeleteYour words are always a blessing. Thank you so much.
This post brought me to tears my sweet friend. Life is so short. We must redeem the time. And, yes, I have often failed. How merciful and gracious our Great God is. HE alone is worthy! Eternity is all that really matters. Much Love to you! Camille XO
ReplyDeleteOh, Camille, how my heart aches for you. I praise God for the grace He has poured out on you that you are able to honor Him well in the midst of this hard, hard providence. I love you, my dear friend.
DeleteWonderful post for all of us, even if parenting isn't part of the equation, time is priceless.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stephani. I love how you honor your parents with the time you give them. Such an example you are.
DeleteOh Trisha, my heart truly goes out to parents with young children these days.
ReplyDelete"the digital world offers so many more ways to waste the time God has given us to teach and disciple our children for His glory."
There have always been excuses, long before media, to be distracted from tending to our children - but the temptation has been amped up to unimaginable levels . Sometimes we have to "Just Say No!"
God bless you sweet friend~
I know, Diane. The distractions seem overwhelming! It requires a constant examining of our motives and desires and goals, etc. I appreciate you so much!
DeleteWow, I read this with tears in my eyes!! It seems there is always some committee at church or the private Christian school, wanting me to help out. I have learnt from experience, that family must come first!! Sometimes people will say things like, "hey, Connie, I haven't seen you at many functions lately," and I get this desire to retort, "did you see how much I did, 10 years ago at my family's expense?" but, instead I smile and say, "my time will come again, but right now I am busy raising my children" You just helped me to refocus on my precious husband, children and foster children. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Connie
Connie,
DeleteI'm thankful to the Lord that you've been encouraged here. Praising God with you that He is faithful to give us the grace we need to do what He's called us to do. Thank you so much for visiting!
