Variegated Fritillary

Reaches Up and Whistler were delighted to find this beautiful butterfly today! It was injured and could no longer fly. We eagerly searched our field guides and excitedly discovered that we were holding a Variegated Fritillary. Whistler happily kept this delicate creature by her side most of the afternoon.

  1. Hi Poffs,
We, too, enjoyed butterflies yesterday. We read the first chapter of Parables of Nature and that got us started. We looked right outside our window and our Purple Coneflower was covered with Painted Ladies. We then went around to the hollyhock and found PL larvae feeding on the leaves. One leaf had a cocoon of sorts on it (I'm doubtful it was a PL chrysalis).

We had fun watching but it will take some work to convince these boys that taking the time to record their observations in their nature journal is worth the effort. Though I failed to take pictures, I did record my observations in my nature journal. Perhaps Whistler and I can share our journals with one another one day over a cup of tea. You did write about and draw this lovely butterfly in journal, right?

Whister, have you seen The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady? I enjoy looking through that book and am inspired by her lovely drawings/paintings.

I am enjoying your blog. Keep up the good work and keep giving us insights in to the life of your lovely family.
