~Gladys Berthe Stern
One of those was my doctor calling in a prescription for me instead of making me wait a week to see him. I was so grateful and wrote him a note letting him know that one decision had made my burden lighter. He in turn called to thank me for the thank you. I don't think doctors get too many of those.
Last week I sent a note to a dear friend who shared with me a yummy cream cheese pound cake recipe years ago. I think of her every time I make that cake, and I wanted her to know how much I appreciated her.
And then there are all those thanks I never sent out, I never said, except in my head. I've mentioned before that for at least a couple of months before my Dad died, I meant to send him a thank you for the Matthew Henry commentaries he gave me years before. But, as someone observed, we always think those we love will live forever.
And what about our children? Are they more aware of what they get right than what they do wrong? Don't assume they know you're proud of them or see the many ways they're growing in grace or the little victories that happen every day. Our husbands? How many sacrifices do they daily make that we take for granted?
Think about what a difference it makes when someone shows you gratitude. Last night, feeling run-down and knowing my Beloved wasn't going to be home until after 10, I offered my children an amazing gourmet meal...canned chicken noodle soup. I know. It was lame, but it was what I could muster up. Instead of complaints, I hear, "Thank you for this wonderful dinner, Mommy."
Yep. That's enough to make you cry.
If a cashier has been unusually pleasant to deal with at the grocery store checkout, stop by to tell the manager what a delight you've found his employee to be, and how thankful you are for her attitude. He'll be glad to pass along the compliment, and she'll go home encouraged and freshly motivated about her work.
If a neighbor's flowerbed catches your eye every time you pull into the driveway, walk over and tell her how thankful you are for the hard work she puts into tending her yard and how it just seems to get more beautiful year after year.
And, of course, when you're captivated by a glorious sunset, or comforted in sorrow, or uplifted by some sweet reminder of the hope God gives in the midst of life's many problems and challenges, make your praise ring not only in your head but on your tongue.
If your pastor's messages encourage your heart and deepen your walk with God, don't assume he just automatically knows this or gets tired of hearing how his ministry is impacting people's lives. Look him in the eye and thank him for his faithfulness to bring you the Word, or jot him a note with a few specifics of how something he said really ministered to you.~Nancy Leigh DeMoss
Choosing Gratitude
May we have eyes wide open to see the many opportunities around us to say "thanks" and hearts and mouths and pens ever ready to do so.
With love,
Trisha
Great words, Trisha! Definately something we are working on at our house!
ReplyDeleteThis post is one of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteThis is how I want to live...remembering to give thanks, not just think it.
It's exciting to following the little heart nudges of the Holy Spirit and actually tell someone when you think of them while making a cake :)
I love the thought that it might be God-prompted and it might be just the encouragement their heart needs on that day.
A few days ago I received a simple text: "Thinking about you this morning so I stopped to pray. Thankful for you"
It was exactly what I needed, but could have so easily been left "unspoken".
I'm so thankful for your words! How many times do I fail to thank those around me!?... oh, how it could brighten their day & bring glory to God!

Its so sweet that your kids showed gratitude for their chicken noodle soup. It really shows that they've been taught to have thankful hearts.
ReplyDeleteSounds like great ideas to use! After my father passed away, I also became very sick. Must have been the stress. Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a word that is lacking in today's society all too often. Your children are so sweet, too - a reflection of the thankful heart you must have, I am sure.
ReplyDeleteI am very thankful for your blog - you challenge me and speak to my heart often, even when I don't have/take the time to say so. Thank you, Trisha - love you, friend!
THANK YOU for blessing & inspiring me nearly every day as well Trisha!
ReplyDeleteThank you sweet friend for blessing me many times over with your post, your kind words, your sweet comments, your thoughts and prayers. For understanding when my heart is heavy and weeping with me and for the times you write me e-mails rejoicing with me (like YIPPE-my sister has been healed). I pray that someday I will get to meet you in person and hug your neck-I am blessed to call you my friend and I am ever thankful to God for touching my heart and blessing me with your friendship.
ReplyDeleteLove you-truly thankful for you.
Hugs
Jill
What a blessing this post is! My Bible class (girls only) teacher way back in high school taught us this very thing. That we should take time to send thank you notes to anyone that has positively impacted our lives--even in small ways. Ironically, many years later I wanted to send her a thank you note for all the wisdom she shared with us in that class, though we didn't treasure it at the time, and I couldn't find an address for her. I tried various ways to find her and never was able to find her again. Thanks for this reminder.
ReplyDeleteSuch sweet words to remember and to take note of...I especially want to remember to give gratitude to my children and my husband. They see the grumpy me too much. ;)
ReplyDeleteI was missing you...and worried about you. Glad to see you're back at it. I know you've posted a few this week but this is the first time I've had a chance to write. Saying an extra prayer for you tonight...just because.
Thank you Trisha for passing along these wonderful reminders. Especially the last one. The average pastor hears mostly critiques instead of praises. How they need to know that we were listening and heeding their labors of love for us.
ReplyDeleteThank you sweet friend.
LOVE this post my friend! And I LOVE you!
ReplyDeleteSorry you were not feeling *up to it* the other night. BUT...how wonderful to read how precious your children were to you!
Much Love,
Camille
PS. Trisha, I just noticed you're expecting another blessing!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! :)
Thanks for the reminder, Trisha, So often we don't take the time. I often chide myself for making a quick phone call to thank some one instead of the time and effort to actually write a note which that person can treasure.
ReplyDeleteShalom Trisha,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Yuri and my wife and I have 4 Children. We live on a tiny Island called Bermuda.
First of all, thanks for your post. It was refreshing to know that just the other day when my daughter and I were at a clothing store, we received such good service and I did exactly what you recommended, I asked for the manager and informed her of the good service I received and why I thought the service was good. We do need to show more appreciation for the little gestures of kindness shown us. It takes but little time.
On another note; I'd like to invite you to read two posts on my blog (Treasure In Earthen Vessels) the first post is 'Mystery Of The Ages' and the other is 'Counterfeit Counsel of Peace'.
I'm trusting that you'd appreciate this gift.
Shalom Yuri
Thank you for the post, dear
ReplyDeletedaughter. I appreciate your kindness and the love you continually show to me. I definitely feel your love.
HUGS,
mom
Absolutely...God has been knocking on my heart with this a lot lately...I have so enjoyed answering his prompting...and I hope my answering has blessed others. I did tell my doctor thanks so much the other day and gave her a hug before I left.
ReplyDeleteGreat reminder..
I love this post, Trisha! And must mention how thankful I am for you and your encouraging posts!!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful reminder, Trisha! Just wonderful! :o)
