BIG numbers,Christmas Traditions, and a FUN giveaway (sounds great, doesn't it?)

In celebration of our reaching 1000 "hits" on our blog (that's the BIG numbers part of it), we have decided to have a contest (that's the giveaway part of it). Yeees, folks, step right up and here what I've got to say! You won't want to miss it! Nooo, sirreee!

What's the contest? you ask. Well, ladies and gents, the contest is this: write a comment on this post, listing your favorite Christmas tradition (that's the Christmas traditions part of it, don't you know). For example, one of my family's favorite traditions is driving around with hot cocoa to see the lights in town or going to the Botanical Gardens to see the River of Lights. Anyhow, just leave a little comment about what you and yours enjoy doing around the Christmas holidays. You'll have until 11:00 PM, Sunday, December 7th, 2008 to leave your comment. (Be sure to leave your name). At the end of the deadline, all the names will be entered in the drawing, and Boo will randomly draw the winner's name, who will then receive his/her choice of either:

1) a selection from I-tunes, up to a $20.00 value. You tell us what you want, and we'll gift you the item. (I-tunes will send the info. to your inbox...) You'll need to tell us the title, artist, and your e-mail address. OR

2) a cd of your choice from Amazon, up to a $20.00 value. We'll have it directly sent to you. Just make sure we have a correct mailing address. We'll even get it there fast....within 2 days of ordering. :)

So, I hope all of you will participate and have a fun time sharing your favorite traditions. I'm sure we'll be able to benefit from them as well! We wish you the best!

  1. How fun! Well sure I'll enter...why not??? =) Pick a good one Boo! She's on my side anyway right ;)

Ok, one of my favorite traditions is listening to (Christian) Christmas music while decorating the house with greenery, lights, and nativity scenes. Or our evening advent reading and story. Also the wonderful fire is good too!

  2. I love being with my children and grandchildren during Christmas. I really look forward to seeing the Christmas lights. I can't leave out all the good food that we normally don't have during the year.

  3. Since I live alone I will tell you what we did when the kids were growing up. Eric, Michele and Dawn were not allowed to go downstairs until mom and dad were up. If they got up too early (like 4-5 a.m.) we would tell them to go back to bed for awhile. When we all gathered downstairs we read the Christmas Story from the Bible and then we opened gifts. Then dad would usually be the one to fix breakfast. After Breakfast it was time to cleanup and start preparing the food for our Christmas Dinner with family members. Plus, we always went to see Aunt Helen Christmas Day because that was more or less "expected". But our visit made Aunt Helen happy so that was always part of Christmas.

Wow,that's bringing back a lot of memories.

  4. Love to be entered. Favorite traditions? Making gingerbread and sugar cookies (and eating about half the dough in the process.) Rereading favorite books in front of the fire, playing carols and hymns with Camilla, making bread and eating it fresh from the oven, playing Monopoly with the whole family, having lots of snowball fights; you get the idea. Lots of family stuff.

  5. Oh dear...What to pick!

I love that right before Christmas- usually on the 23rd or so, we go to Walgreens (this year it will be Wal-Mart :)) and we all get our own shopping carts and go buy shopping stuffers for everyone. It is lots of fun hiding the stuff in your cart when you see a family member! We go home and hide it till the 24th when we all take turns going into the living room and putting our stuff in the stockings- maybe catching a peek at our own! Then we will watch "It's a Wonderful Life" and have hot cocoa and stay up past our bedtime. :)

What a fun idea to do on your blog!
    Love,
    Rebecca

  6. HAHA!! I just had to laugh as I looked at how amny have already posted! I guess everyone is hoping to win something!! ;)

Well, I have to say that my favorite Christmas tradition is.....reading the Christmas story of Jesus' birth! While daddy reads the story, the boys act it out with the little nativity scene! It is so neat to see them doing that and seeing them really think about why we celebrate Christmas! ;)
I also LOVE being with family and enjoying the good visits!

Now, please tell Boo (if she doesnt really remember me) that I am really nice!! ;) HAHA!!
    Love to you all!!

  9. Hello there Poff Clan,
I've been reading your blog a lot since the last time we saw you at your church. When I saw the give away I thought it was time to leave a comment finally. (Don't I pick good posts to comment on?) Anyway...

My favorite Christmas traditions hmm...Every year on the day after thanksgiving our family loads up in the van and listens to an Accapella christmas tape (and yes it really is an old cassette!) Anyway we talk and sing all the way up and trek around for a few hours looking for the "perfect" tree. This year we figured out we'd done that for 21 years in a row! So that's a very old tradition in our family.
We also have always watched It's a wonderful life on Christmas eve and daddy ALWAYS cries at the end...I love you daddy.
So anyway, those are a couple of the Skeen family memories. Thanks for "hosting" the giveaway. It looks like fun!

P.S. Mrs. Poff, I've been praying for you that your surgery would go well. I will also continue to pray for your pregnancy. It's neat we happened to visit your church the sunday you announced your new Poff Blessing. :) Congratulations!

  10. Well, I've been meaning to post on here for a few days now but school has had me otherwise busily preoccupied. And, as both of my sisters have basically already exhausted the list of all of the family traditions that I look forward to, I will have to come up with something original...

I guess that I would have to say that one of the things that I most look forward to as the Christmas season approaches is the opportunity to pull out all of my Christmas music books, sit down at the piano, and play. I also enjoy searching for new Christmas music and arrangements of songs I already own to play or listen to while I do school, study, or do school... :D

  11. What a fun idea to have a contest so everyone can share their ideas. One of our very favorite traditions is to listen to a dramatized broadcast from Back to the Bible called the 12 Voices of Christmas while we decorate the tree, clean up the house, really do anything because the children love listening to all day long every day of the season. You can listen to each of the different voices here: http://www.backtothebible.org/index.php/The-Twelve-Voices-of-Christmas.html

    Gabriel Voice of Disclosure
    Zacharias Voice of Disbelief
    Elizabeth Voice of Blessing
John the Baptist Voice of Preparation
    Mary Voice of Wonder
    Joseph Voice of Reason
    Angels Voice of Praise
    Shepherds Voice of Declaration
    Anna Voice of Thanksgiving
    Simeon Voice of Peace
    Herod Voice of Deception
Wise Men Voice of Adoration Williams favorite is the Angels-the voice of praise. Here's a quote "Have you ever heard a really big men's choir? Start with that idea, but imagine them not in choir robes, but girded for battle. Not grim draftees, but soldiers terrible in joy. Not so few you could count them if you tried, but legions and legions. Not singing with weak human lungs, but sounding the eternal chords with which the morning stars sang at creation. Not bare four-part harmony, but every voice with a different song and all the voices fitting together like a million pieces of a stained-glass window into the glory of heaven. Not a song with a few words and a chorus, but a song that could not be contained even if you knew all the greatest words from all the languages of earth. A song, if you tried to sing it, it would say, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill towards men." That was singing."
Emma and my favorite is Elizaeth:Yes, I was one of the twelve voices of Christmas. Mine was the voice of blessing. Blessing because I was no longer barren. Blessing because in the midst of my joy, Mary arrived and added to it. Blessing because her baby would bring God's greatest blessing to the world. I was carrying the forerunner. And Mary was carrying the Savior! That is a cause for blessing.

    Love, Nicole

  12. HMMMMMMMMM....How do I love Christmas???? Let me count the ways....ok...there's not enough room here to list them all...but I have several that bounce to the front of my mind....As a child, my favorite memory of Christmas was the excitement of "the night before" and how we would go to bed and couldn't go to sleep and my brother and I would be so excited and knew that when we finally did fall off to sleep, when we woke in the morning, we'd go wake mom and dad up and stand at the top of the stairs (because we had to wait for all of us to go down together) and try to peek down the stairs to see what was down there waiting for us. The anticipation was too much!

As an adult and parent, we have adopted the tradition of having an "appetizer" meal on Christmas Eve...so we pick different appetizer favorites and have that as a meal on special Christmas paper plates we've bought...this has been fun for us.
